Password FAQ
What's a good password?
Something secure that you'll remember -- i.e., not so off-the-wall that you have to write it down to keep it handy, but definitely something no one would be able to guess. Good passwords:
- are not the same as your username
- are more than 4 characters long, preferably at least 7 or 8 characters long
- aren't just lower-case alphabetical. They should contain a mixture of upper- and lower-case letters, as well as numbers and/or punctuation characters
- don't use personal information (e.g., signficant birthdays, phone number, Social Security Number, names of pets or loved ones) or words/names/acronyms (e.g., caterpillar, Jefferson, USA)
- are not easy to spot while you're typing them (e.g., qwerty, 12345, zzzzz)
- are changed frequently (at least every month or two)
- aren't shared with anyone
So how do I come up with a good password?
Some methods for creating a good password:
- Pick an easy-to-remember phrase and use the first letters of each word, adding capitalization, numbers and punctuation marks. For example, "To be or not to be" could turn into "2Bon2B?"
- customize a word with numbers and punctuation marks (e.g., #br0wns?)
How do I change my password?
For web and mud hosting customers:
- Log into your account.
- From the command prompt, type passwd.
- Type in your current password at the Old password prompt. You'll then be prompted for the new password. This has to be at least 6 characters long, and must differ by at least three positions from the old one (i.e., you can't change just one or two characters in it).
- Type in your new password.
- Re-type your new password. The passwords will not appear on the screen as you type. If you make a mistake, you'll get a Mismatch - password unchanged message and will have to repeat the process.
For image hosting customers:
- Let us know that you want a new image hosting password via phone or e-mail. Please don't put your desired new password in an e-mail.
- We will call you back with your new password. For security reasons, we neither send nor accept password information via e-mail.
For forum users:
- At the login screen, select the Forgot Password option and follow the prompts.
- An HTML link and a new password will be e-mailed to you. Click on the link and use the new password to log in.
- Change your password once you've logged in.
